Official Guinness Book of Records Rules

Skipstone
  1. The record is for the greatest number of skips made by a stone thrown by someone horizontally across water. One 'skip' is a forward movement of a stone over the water which sets off a visible series of concentric circles, MINUS either the first or the last of the circles.

  2. The stone must be natural and not made specially for the attempt, and neither can it be smoothed down in any way.

  3. No part of the person's body should touch the water during the throw and until the stone stops skipping.

  4. Any attempts must be made in the presence of adjudicators approved by the International Stone Skipping Federation, the address of
which is: PO Box 189, Driftwood, Texas, 78619, USA.

  5. The attempt must be documented on film or videotape in such a manner that the entire skip may be viewed from start to finish in one continuous camera shot, and with a quality allowing for slow motion verification and count of each skip.

The current (2005) record is: 38 skips

Authentication
The following should be provided:
  1. Signed statements of authentication by two independent persons of some standing in the community, including contact addresses andtelephone numbers, confirming that all of the rules have been adhered to.

  2. Independent corroboration in the form of local or national newspaper cuttings detailing the key facts.

  3. Video coverage and photographs or transparencies of the event, if possible of reproducible quality and preferably in colour.

NB. WE MUST STRESS THAT WE CANNOT PROVIDE PERSONNEL TO INVIGILATE RECORD ATTEMPTS; THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY.

YOU ARE ADVISED TO CHECK WITH US AGAIN JUST BEFORE YOUR ATTEMPT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE RECORD HAS NOT BEEN BEATEN.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GUINNESS CANNOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ACCIDENTS OR ILLNESSES THAT MAY COME ABOUT DURING OR AS A RESULT OF RECORD ATTEMPTS. WE DO ADVISE THAT MEDICAL ATTENTIONS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES.

Publication

The Guinness Book of Records is likely only to publish records which represent improvements on existing records. We may very occasionally publish an inaugural best performance if we consider it to be of a kind which is likely to become the subject of widespread and preferably, international, competition. However in no circumstances will we undertake to publish any record and reserve the right to determine in our sole discretion the records to be published. Even if you do beat the existing record and we accept your claim, it does not necessarily mean that details will be included in the book, as your record may subsequently be beaten - we can only include the record which stands when we go to press. Pleas send all documentation clearly marked as to which record has been attempted and please incicate if you require any material returned to you after verification.

Good luck in your attempt!
